Just a few kilometers south of Breda, near Bouvigne Castle, is the Mastbos, a beautiful wooded park of more than 1,250 acres that has become one of the region’s most popular recreation spots. Taking its name from its many tall pines – they were for centuries used for the masts of the Dutch and Spanish fleets – Mastos is one of the country’s oldest forests and has been tended and replanted numerous times through the centuries, including 1505 when Scots Pine were planted. Once a popular hunting ground for the aristocracy, the park is now all about the walking trails through the rich flora and fauna, with numerous beautiful views making it a perfect picnic spot.

Old town Breda

Breda’s picturesque Old Town center is a wonderful place to explore, day or night. Surrounded by a ring of canals is the Grote Markt, home to the majestic Grote Kerk and the 18th-century Town Hall  (Stadhuis). The oldest part of the Town Hall is the Great Hall, along with the adjoining Little Town Hall (Cleyn Raedthuys). Built in 1767 by combining three adjoining houses to create a unified façade, the building was further expanded in 1898 and again in 1925 with the addition of the Council Chamber with its impressive stained glass. Highlights of a visit include a chance to see a copy of Velázquez’s famous painting, Surrender of Breda, and the garden with its old coach-shed (now a conference room). Another attraction, just a few minutes walk northeast of the Grote Kerk, is the Kasteelplein with its old buildings and equestrian statue of William III of Orange.

Formerly, park was the garden of the Castle of Breda. The park has a pond with a fountain, lots of flowers and plants and it is a favourite spot of locals where you can walk, cycle or just relax in the nature. located between the train station and the city center. A great place to relax, meet with friends, have a picnic or enjoy one of the events held here during the year. During summertime, lots of concerts are held here.

DOK 19

One of Breda’s many bars & terraces, Dok 19 gives you good food, friendly people and nice view of the river. During weekends, the place transforms into a nice pub with good music. It’s also the best view for all those water events happening on the canal! Dok 19 offers a great view of the river. During summer, you can enjoy the water festivals that take place practically every day. Plus, the staff is very friendly and helpful, which always gives a place a gold star in my books. Ask for a sandwich if you’re hungry, they’ll bring one from next door!

Grote Markt Food Market

Most locals prefer this market compared to the supermarket frozen fruit, vegetables and meat as it is a chance to get fresh produce at excellent prices. They are also made by local producers, so people are happy to support the local economy. Twice a week, Breda locals have a chance to buy fresh food from local producers. Every Tuesday and Fridays, in the square near the Grote Kerk, you can find everything from fresh meat, cheese to vegetables and herbs.

Irish Pub O’Mearas

This pub is located on one of the oldest streets in Breda right across the Grote Kerk in the center of the city. The entire atmosphere of the place shouts “Irish” – the media played is Irish, the newspapers are Irish and of course – they support the Irish sports teams. It is a lovely place to enjoy a chill evening with friends and a good Irish beer. You can enjoy several types of Irish beers and a wide range of Irish whiskeys, meet people from all over the world, listen to live music or view live sports. This is truly a sports pub with a touch of Irish. Love it!

Café Vulling

At Café Vulling, you will find a varied audience, from young to old. Thanks to this audience, the atmosphere is always excellent, as it is supposed to be in a brown café. Café Vulling is also known for its cheap prices and it’s second cup of coffee/tea for free. There is no service, so the prices are lower than at the neighboring cafés. The music you hear is very varied from the 60s to now. During the week the music is mostly in the background and in the weekends the volume is increased to a fun party.
